The inception of Tamil and Tamilar Diaspora Studies was not just a product of profound discussions, but also a testament to the passion and dedication of scholars like Professor George Hart III, a distinguished scholar proficient in Tamil, Sanskrit, Greek, and Latin. Professor Hart ardently advocated for Tamil’s recognition as one of the classical languages. The seeds of this initiative were sown during engaging conversations at the Frost Art Museum with Professor Erik Larson and Kausalya Hart, who shared this passion and dedication.
As awareness grew, I observed the challenges faced by prestigious institutions like Harvard and others in recruiting qualified individuals for their Tamil Chair. It became evident that there needed to be a talent pipeline, a void that could only be addressed by establishing formal degree programs in Tamil studies. Professor Larson’s enthusiastic support of this initiative underscored the global impact of this initiative.
