Tamil is one of the oldest surviving classical languages in the world, dating back more than 2000 years. It is spoken by about 85 million people in India and other places, including Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Singapore, Canada, and Europe. Its history, literature, and culture are inexhaustibly rich. In addition to the richness of its older heritage, Tamil has immense and growing modern literature and a vast entertainment industry that includes, among other things, film, television, dance, and music. Tamil is a language of great importance to the world, both in its classical manifestations and active life today.

உலகின் மிகப் பழமையான பாரம்பரிய மொழிகளில் தமிழ் ஒன்றாகும். இந்தியாவிலும் இலங்கை, சிங்கப்பூர், மலேசியா, கனடா மற்றும் ஐரோப்பா உள்ளிட்ட பிற இடங்களிலும் சுமார் 85 மில்லியன் மக்கள் பேசும் மொழி. இம்மொழியின் வரலாறு 2000 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேல். ஆகவே தமிழ் வரலாறு, இலக்கியம் மற்றும் கலாச்சாரம் விவரிக்க முடியாத அளவிற்கு செறிவூட்டிய மொழி. அதன் பழைய பாரம்பரியத்தின் செழுமையைத் தவிர தற்போது தமிழில் அளவற்ற வளர்ந்து வரும் நவீன இலக்கியங்கள், நடனம் இசை மற்றும் பொழுதுபோக்குத் துறை (திரைப்படம், தொலைக்காட்சி) பல உள்ளன. பாரம்பரிய சரித்திரமும் மற்றும் தற்போதைய வளர்ச்சியும் தமிழ் மொழியை உலகிற்கு மிகவும் முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த ஒரு மொழி என்று என்று கூறலாம்.

Mahakavi Subramaniya Bharathi, fondly referred to and revered as Bharathiyar, was a 20th-century Tamil poet who lived during British rule. He is a polyglot fluent in Bengali, Hindi, Sanskrit, Kuuch, and English and translated many literary works into Tamil. He always claimed that no other language is as sweet as Tamil. Though Tamil has extensive classical literature, it often fails to reach the masses due to its ornate language. Bharathiyar created poems that can easily be understood. Many of his poems have been adopted in Tamil cinema. His topics include the earth, the elements, human emotions, struggles, and independence from colonial rule. As you can imagine, he was not very popular with the British empire and was exiled to Pondicherry, a French colony in India. Please allow me to read one of his poems.

பாரதியார் என்று அனைவராலும் பேரன்புடன் அளிக்கப்படும் மகாகவி சுப்ரமணிய பாரதி அவர்கள் 20ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில் ஆங்கிலேயர்கள் ஆட்சியின் போது வாழ்ந்த தமிழ் கவிஞர் ஆவார். ஹிந்தி சமஸ்கிருதம் மற்றும் ஆங்கிலம் உட்பட மொழிகள் பால் கூர்மையான அறிவும் பன்முகத் திறனும் கொண்டிருந்தார். ஏராளமான இலக்கியங்களை தமிழ் மொழியில் மொழிபெயர்த்துள்ள இவர். யாமறிந்த மொழிகளிலே தமிழ்மொழி போல் இனிதாவது எங்கும் காணோம்” என எப்போதும் கூறுவதுண்டு. பிற மொழிகளில் காணப்படாத பல்வேறு செவ்வியல் இலக்கியங்கள் தமிழில் இருந்தாலும் அதன் அணிநலம் வாய்ந்த சொற்றொடர்களும் மேம்படுத்தப்பட்ட கவிச்சொற்களும் மக்களை எளிதில் சென்றடைய தவறுகின்றன. பாரதியார் யாவரும் எளிமையாக புரிந்து கொள்ளும்படியான கவிதைகளைப் படைத்தார். அவரின் பல கவிதைகள் இப்போது திரைப்படங்களில் எழுத்தாளப்படுகின்றன. பூமி,மனித உணர்வுகள், போராட்டங்கள், காலனித்துவ ஆட்சியில் இருந்து சுதந்திரம் போன்ற பல்வேறு கூறுகளில் தனது எண்ணங்களைத் தமிழ் வழி வடித்து மகிழ்ந்தார். அதனால் ஆங்கிலேயர்களால் இந்தியாவில் பிரஞ்சு காலனியான பாண்டிச்சேரிக்கு அவர் நாடு கடத்தப்பட்டார்.

இப்போது அவருடைய கவிதைகளில் ஒன்றை வாசிக்க எனக்கு அனுமதி தாருங்கள். இக்கவிதை சக்தியின் நற்பண்புகளைப் போற்றுகிறது. இங்கு சக்தி என்பது தெய்வத்தை குறிப்பதாகவும் சிலர் பொருள் கொள்வர், இருப்பினும் மனிதநேயத்துடன் சேவை செய்யத் தேவையான மனம் மற்றும் உடல் வலிமையே சக்தி.

The Bharathiar poem extols the virtues of Shakthi. One could argue that Shakthi here refers to a goddess. However, Shakthi, as in many Tamil words, encompasses energy, ability, strength, effort, power, and capability. To me, Shakthi refers to mental and physical strength imparting the power to go beyond and serve humanity. I will share three excerpts from “Thunbam illaada nilaye shakthi.” It means that the “State of No Sorrow is Power’.

துன்ப மிலாத நிலையே சக்தி,
தூக்க மிலாக்கண் விழிப்பே சக்தி;
அன்பு கனிந்த கனிவே சக்தி,
ஆண்மை நிறைந்த நிறைவே சக்தி;

State of no sorrow is power
State of vigilance is power
Benevolent love is power
Life of spirituality is power

வாழ்வு பெருக்கும் மமதியே சக்தி,
மாநிலம் காக்கும் மதியே சக்தி;
தாழ்வு தடுக்குஞ் சதிரே சக்தி,
சஞ்சலம் நீக்குந் தவமே சக்தி,

Knowledge that helps life flourish is power
Knowledge that helps to protect the motherland is power
Averting adversity is power / Unity among diversity is power
Removing turmoil is power

வீழ்வு தடுக்கும் விறலே சக்தி,
விண்ணை யளக்கும் விரிவே சக்தி;
ஊழ்வினை நீக்கும் உயர்வே சக்தி,
உள்ளத் தொளிரும் விளக்கே சக்தி.

Preventing descent with dignity is power
Appreciating the expanse of the universe is power
Rising above degeneracy/corruption is power
Radiating divine energy from within is the highest power

I like to add my own verse that befits today’s celebration.
இன்றைய கொண்டாட்டத்திற்கு ஏற்ற என் சொந்த நான்கு வரிகளை இங்கு சேர்க்க விரும்புகிறேன்.

தாய்மொழியைக் கற்பதே சக்தி
தாய் கலாச்சாரத்தைக் கற்பதே சக்தி
தாய்மொழியின் பெருமையே சக்தி
மொழியும் கலாச்சாரமும் கொண்ட சுயஅடையாளமே சக்தி

Learning thy mother language is power
Learning thy mother culture is power
Pride in thy mother language is power
Language and cultural identity are power
